Fannie M. Thomas

Client: Celf Ar Y Cyd (Amgueddfa Cymru), 2024

This pop-up page was created whilst on commission by Amgueddfa Cymru (The Museum of Wales) to produce a piece of artwork inspired by the theme ‘Politics, Protest and Activism.’ Using an imperfect style inspired by the feminist zines of the 1970’s, the page commemorates the remarkable character of Fannie M. Thomas who, born in the artist’s hometown of Dolgellau, made significant contributions to the Women’s Movement of the early 20th century. Not only was Miss Thomas a feminist writer, headmistress and first Welsh president of the National Federation of Women Teachers, she was also said to be the ‘first woman in South Wales to ride a motor-cycle!’
