Yr Hyn Sy’n Dilyn / What Follows

Castell04 by CARN X Cadw, Caernarfon Castle, July 2026

Yr Hyn Sy’n Dilyn / What Follows reflects the histories, emotions and connections that can follow us into the future, whether they be good or bad, conscious or unconscious, personal or communal.

The sculpture forms part of Ceris Dyfi Jones' ongoing Heartstrings series, a body of crocheted figures featuring red threads that extend from their chests and act as visual markers of emotional ties and lived experiences. While the figures can be positioned deliberately, the 'heartstrings' that connect them often take on unexpected forms, echoing the sometimes unpredictable nature of the human heart itself.

Presented within the walls of Caernarfon Castle, Yr Hyn Sy’n Dilyn / What Follows takes on additional meaning, situated as it is against a backdrop of historical oppression and bloodshed faced by the Cymry. This is indicative of Jones’ work, where not only is the creation of individual pieces intuitive, but each piece is a product of its environment.

“CASTELL04 is part of a year-long Arts Council of Wales funded programme led by CARN, celebrating the positive role of migration in Caernarfon and beyond. Migration is not just the movement of people across borders, it is the shifting of memories, traditions, ideas and identities into new landscapes. It is the layering of past and present and the formation of the future. Caernarfon has long been a site of significant cultural migration from the Roman Empire to the blooming of the slate industry. The town has developed its unique culture by welcoming new voices and making them part of its fabric”. — Menna Thomas of CARN
